Thoughts and Thanks

I hope that you all have been having a wonderful humid Ohio Summer and staying cool in the pool and indoors.  It reminds me of growing up in Central Florida.... and Polk County at that.  Polk County was and is known as one of the most oppressive heat and humidity combinations in all of Florida.  I'm just saying... when it's thick to breath.... don't stay in it.  Wow.

Dublin Art Fair 2012 Recap by the artist Dennis Velco - Fine Art Finger PainterThe Dublin Art Fair was great - despite the heat.  It featured a core of Dublin Area Art League members, along with about 90 other artists from all over the Midwest.  The tenacity of the artists, persevering despite the heat, paid off for many even as they acknowledged the weather and remained in good spirits.   Art fair visitors came out... perhaps fewer in number... but they came to see the artists; and for some it was an annual tradition.  I literally thanked countless people for coming and showing their support. It also gave me an opportunity to get to know some DAAL members better.  I also had the opportunity to walk around, meet and chat with some of the other displaying artists. There were some amazing artists... both in their art and just who they are as people.  Each was unique.  Their point of view, their way of portraying it.  I am always amazed in our  human ability to create and express.

I'd like to thank Sandy Libertini & Melinda Moore of Grand Scheme Promotions, LLC for their support this year in helping to get all the press coverage and advertising and organization that they did.  It is way more than most are willing to volunteer to do.  For good reason.  I tell you what folks.  We pay the Dublin Art Fair consultants to help.... with good reason.... but still Bev Goldie worked to the point of making me feel ashamed for not doing more.  Gina and Paul Atwell are always there to help to the end and Cindy Bryden is always there including what ever bribery she had to do to get her kids to "volunteer".  There are so many that I can't mention all here … but this event really helped me see that we have an amazing core of dedicated members.  Many active members of DAAL have volunteered throughout this past year and to everyone who participates - THANKS !!

I'd love to invite and challenge you to step up… believe me, there are always things to do.  As a group, we are striving to make volunteering
easier, with mentoring and step-by-step guides.  You will not be alone.  We invite you to learn, to foster your own career and your love for
the arts and our wonderful community.  Even if it's just sitting at an information booth for 2 - 3 hours.  You and your time will be and are
valued.  You are a part of a whole.  You are part of something that our community actually relies upon.  I hope you will see the value in
volunteering too.

This was my very first time ever showing in an Art Fair venue.  What an education.  I still don't know everything, but I know a lot more about
being prepared for the next art fair.

OK.. back to the record breaking heat, humidity and .. the Dublin Art Fair experience..... The heat literally boiled my brain.  I went to
Giant Eagle to purchase a Sport Drink prior to arriving the first day for set up.  I couldn't find any... darn those end caps... and bought
tea instead..... WRONG.   In heat you must replace the salts... electrolytes... else you can experience symptoms .... or in my case...
every symptom of HEAT EXHAUSTION.  Wow... not fun... it took me 4 - 5 days to recover.  By the end of each day I couldn't form a full
sentence in my typical verbose way, I conveyed basic absolute necessities...I kind of sounded like Captain Kirk from Star Trek...
"Bold color... Texture... Paint by finger... Videos on Website.... Have a great day".   Heed my heat warning.  You can't just hydrate.. you
must properly hydrate.   THANK YOU to those who handed me a sport drink.  Sorry I was so fried that I didn't grasp it for myself until it
was all over.   Your support literally helped me.  THANK YOU !!

Displaying one's art publicly is something.  Right?  Don't you ever wonder what people say about your art?  It can make you feel a little
naked.  Now add humidity and 103 degrees for 10 - 11 hours and random public human beings standing within 3 feet of your work and you have to.... what?  Be shy, ignore, be present, mindful, acknowledge, assess, engage, pull tid-bit's of information from them, try to connect with them, help them see that connection in your art, provide information for follow up, inviting them to take a next step, if it's quick
momentary interest, or potentially work to close the deal.  I didn't bring prints, and likely would have sold a ton.  But I did sell one of
my family and friends' most coveted artworks.  I wouldn't give it away to the many who have asked because I knew if I sold that piece... I'm
legit.  It was Soul Journey.  A wonderful young couple bought it.  It was for their first year anniversary and it was their very first time
to ever purchase original art.  They... or rather she... was adamant that a gaming poster would have to be moved so my painting could hang
in their living room.  Now... hopefully, as funds permit, they'll strive to only purchase original art.

Is that beautiful or what?

I've got a complete other side I might share with you in the next news letter.... I'll just say.. I finally.. one month later got paid for the
second piece of original art sold that weekend.

It's not the difficulties you face.. it's how you face them and what you learn from it that's important.  Be OK with making mistakes... it's
how we learn.   After all, a great saying goes like this, "If you aren't failing or making mistakes, you likely aren't pushing yourself
enough."

The Dublin Art Fair of 2012 will now and forever be engrained in my memory.  I look forward to learning more.

Ms. Audrey's House - March 10, 2012 - Guest the artist Dennis Velco Live Radio Interview by Dennis-Velco

The additional guest an up and coming comedian, vibrant and funny Gina G. is based in the Los Angeles area.  I feel for Gina G.  Because Ms Audrey had me chat first.  I warned her.  I'm a talker.  And 15 - 20 minutes is barely enough time for me to get in a groove.  This was my first live aired radio interview and I've learned a lot from it.  I'm thanful to Ms. Audrey for having me as a guest and hope to be a guest in the future.

In the Ms. Audrey's House discussion I decided to talk about from where I've come from and how I've transitioned into doing what I want full time... my art.  In sharing my own story, what was so wonderful is that it was similar to both Gina G.'s and  Ms. Audrey's experiences in that we all three somewhat gave into our true life's calling a little later in life - arriving at a place of doing what we truy love.  That s a wonderful place.

So, please listen to the radio show and hear a little about my journey.  I hope it inspires you.

Miracles and Magic happen when we have faith - including faith in ourselves AND take action.

About Audrey Liggins:

I am a graduate of Cal State San Bernardino (go Coyotes!), with a BA in Biological Psychology. They say that makes me a great listener (They could be lying, you’ll tell me if they are, right? Right?)). I am a 47-year-old entrepreneur with no children, five siblings, and 25 nieces and nephews who call her Cinderella. I own and operate a home-based business as an editor and research writer as well as holding down a full-time job.

I sing, I act, I love food and music and, sometimes, I make a complete ass of myself in public. One of my favorite things to do is listen to people talk about themselves and what they do. I love hearing about people and finding out things about them that are different from or outside of my everyday.

Come on over to Ms. Audrey’s House and see who else comes to visit. Kick your shoes off at the door, have a seat on the Magic Couch, and make yourself at home. There’s coffee in the kitchen…or would you prefer tea?

I have thoughts as fast as a speeding bullet.  What I’ve grown to realize is that my reality is typically faster than the average bear.  That is one of my mutant super human powers.  My official X-Men leather and Spandex suit is on order.  But no cape... they can get caught in whirling things and just get in the way.  I will also have to loose a few pounds to rock the look.  Thank goodness Spring is near for more outdoor activities.

As an artist two more super human powers emerged.  The first super ability is my ability to create paintings that other humans and beings connect with.  They feel my energy though the paintings.  This is power transference and this power is so great that it will even live on after my physical demise.  An additional super human power is my ability to warp time during the artwork creation process.  For me in my super human artist mode at times minutes can seem like hours and vise versa at times hours can seem like minutes.

I recently became more aware and have gained some level of control over time in a whole new way. This new manifestation of my time warping abilities came into a stronger ability when faced with a new challenge.  That challenge was my soon to be 3 year old son, Aidric pictured here, around a month ago just out of no where stopped taking naps.

This of course is a wonderful developmental mile stone in every toddler's bouncing life.  But from a parent's view it can be perceived in many ways.  I use to... notice the now past tense... use my son's nap time to paint and to do other arts related work.  His abrupt change gravely affected my once gratefully received precious personal time to feel like a productive adult and professional while still being a stay-at-home parent.  For a few days.. maybe a couple weeks, I went through the grieving process about loosing this precious time.  At first I rejected it and tried as hard as I could to get him to take a nap... even if for just one hour.  I pleaded.  I begged.  I tried "quite time" where we did quite play in his room all the while I was trying to temp him into his bed for a nap.  I had to come to terms with this.  He's not going to take a nap any more.  I no longer will have that time to myself until September when he'll be starting pre-school daily.  I have something to look forward to.  But I had to get a grip on the now.  Not only did I loose that time, I now have a toddler who's time has to be filled with activities, in the middle of Winter no less.  Sure we can continue to do all the activities we've been doing.  But we now have more awake time to fill.  I had to move through my denial and jump into the coping phase of greiving the loss.  I turned to some child activity books for ideas.  This got me beginning to loosely plan for lots of developmental and learning activities wrapped in an atmosphere of fun.  We did lots of things before.  But somehow I felt we needed to step it up.  So we started to do art projects almost daily, as much running around, ball tossing, tricycle riding, threading cereal rings on string, bean bag tossing, and sharing music and dancing as much as we can.  Also, instead of the occasional play dates I've taken on to organize my own "Parent / Play Date Club".  We have our first this coming Monday where 5 or 6 families will come over.  We'll then be discussing the frequency and rotation plans.  This will be open to grow and will include field trips.  I've made it through my loss of my son's nap time grieving process to acceptance and embracing it.

This is where my new found or expanded super power comes in.  By focusing that time on my son and in more activities with him, I have expanded my time warping abilities to include experiencing time from a child's perspective more fully.  I realize that up to now I've enjoyed our time yet I was more task oriented verses just allowing it to simply be.  Sure we still have appointments, meals have to be made and the dogs feed at or near particular times.  But what a joy to allow yourself to let go of the constraints of time and truly be present in the moment with your child.  That super power to slow down and be present with him I know will be lasting memories for us both.

In a 15 adult minute span of time we can tickle, laugh, be amazed, dance, create art, sing, build a city, destroy a city, have a complete dramatic melt down, learn something new, fall down, get hurt... cry... laugh... run... hug...  make a mess... have fun... have a wonderful human connection.

I am so blessed to have a child to teach the value of time and how to have control over it... be myself and relish in every moment.

Perception is reality.

Life is good
